    Estero Island or Fort Myers Beach is far away from the crumbling walls of Wall Street. It does have a Wachovia Bank. But will the island, like any town in the USA be affected by the fall of Lehman Brothers, the 158 year old institution and 4th largest lender in the USA? By the enormous 70 plus billion dollar debt AIG, the largest insurer in the US is facing?

    I saw the town meeting yesterday on our local TV and the budget seems to be about the same as last year.In fact, our balance sheet is better then last year.But if AIG falls how many islanders and Floridians will be affected? A huge amount.For starters many use AIG for their car insurance. No problem we will switch to another insurer.

    The island survives regardless.I can look at the ever powerful sea. Its not going anywhere.

     

       

    We do know that if more banks declare bankruptcy, there will be less money available. That means less credit for cars, houses and for example washer and dryers.Maybe its a good thing in the long term.Perhaps Americans will try to save more but we all know that many businesses need credit to make the ball rolling. We use our imagination.

    I don't feel sorry for the high paid CEO's with their magical  parachutes, ridiculously high incomes.monster pensions and other fringe benefits. I do think that most employees at Lehman brothers who lost their jobs ( over 15,000) were just making a living and have families and have bills like anyone else.Should we feel sorry that their stocks went down the drain and their pension is not worth anything? I believe that many are just hard working employees..the greed comes from a dozen guys in Connecticut who pull the strings. They are not pulling much now.Its a wake up call.

    But here in Fort Myers Beach, Wall Street looms over our sky but we move on. We will still have our shrimps, our cool cottages, our beach and resources.Its all relative.Its all about having a better attitude even when it gets tougher.We Americans are tough.We move on.

    When my wife and I first moved from Old Town Naples, we were looking for an island which had more moderate prices and  had more down to earth quality and kept its heritage with its older cottages, its fishing with its largest commercial port in the area located along the narrow Matanza Pass  and its formidable Calusa Indian history.

      This Jimmy Buffet life style area filled with shops and countless restaurants and bars applies only to the downtown of Fort Myers Beach or Town Square.

    We often go and mix with the crowd in Town Square or at The Lighthouse, which is a fun motel with a colorful tiky bar and pool where you can watch sports or just smooze about and take  a dip which having one of these froo froo drinks.     Going Wild

     

    I first met Azi some four years ago when he moved near my home, to a duplex, the small first floor unit. He was saving as much as he could and finally in December 2006, he accomplished his dream. He opened "Going Wild," a Fort Myers Beach boutique located at the corner of Crescent street and Estero Boulevard. After a few obligatory years in the Israeli Army, he took a gamble and moved to Miami in his early 20's and learned about retail and professional painting from his uncle. Fort Myers Beach seemed the natural choice to start his new life.

     

     

    Going Wild offers all sorts of fun beach and island wear, paint brushed shirts, Henna tattoos, glasses, towels, swim wear, summer skirts and shorts for the ladies (which I got once for the heck of it..I mean the Henna tatoo!) but mostly its a beach store with affordable price tags.

    Being a Business owner and facing a stagnant economy is not something that scares Azi. After all, any endeavor must seem easy compared to serving in the Israeli Army.

    A moment of Zen in Fort Myers Beach

      

     

         Like many I have a place of refuge and a place where we can have "fun" or refill my batteries.

    When I lived in large cities like New York I used to go to Central Park or stay on top of my building roof top

    and kick back and look at the Empire State Building. The noise of the city was always omnipresent and vibrant.

    When I moved to Fort Myers Beach of course I was looking for the feel of the sand under the feet and the salt in the air.

    But, what really drawn me, like so many, is the sound of the waves. Today very few were strolling along the beach, the

    sky was full with clouds and I found some peace there again. We can just look at the immense sea and smile.

    You heard that same sound many years ago, relentless and powerful and memories come back and forth

    like the to and fro of the waves. Its a good time to be.

                  Fort Myers Beach is a barrier island located in Southwest Florida along the Gulf Of Mexico.It has been our home for about nine years. It is located some 26 miles North of Naples and it has city limits with Both Fort Myers and Bonita Springs.

It is well know for its shrimp fishing, numerous canals with access to the Gulf Of Mexico, and its lay back life style and friendly though at times eccentric residents.It is part of Lee County but is separate from Fort Myers and is its own municipality with 5 councilmen with the mayor, a vice mayor,and three elected councilmen.

    Fort Myers Beach After a Summer Storm

    Finally we got some rain and we got the perfect tropical storm. Just plenty of rain.We couldn't have asked for a better rain pour.

    Downtown Fort Myers Beach was renovated approximately five years ago and since then, they have resurfaced many of the streets and remodeled the buildings. The above photograp was shot the same day after a much awaited rainfall, breaking the area's drought.  The rain poured and already many visitors were back in town  after a full 24 hours of on and off again rain. The Local people love it and the kids are surfing surf.

    The cobblestones were part of the resurfacing of the street, and more of the same can be seen on the sidewalks along Estero Boulevard.

     I recall the first time I experienced a tropical storm, whenmy wife and I lived in Key West, and eve though the streets had water up to your knees in some spots, it didn't seem to bother the native spritts.  The residents still could be found out enjoying a beer or a pina colada the attracitive, tropical cafes and bars. A few years ago on Fort Myers Beach, we had a stronger storm and the local residents didn't seem bothered, either.  Some even had floaters and flat bed canoes along the streets and were raising beers in the air. I knew Floridians were different. Call it guts or optimism, they certainly know how to make the best out of a wet situation. So my wife and I took our own canoe and went along the streets. A few hours later, the effects of the flood was completely gone.  It never lasts long and we always know when its coming. It was, in fact, exciting and the next day we were all back to our lives and jobs.

     

    A few hours later the street of Fort Myers Beach were drying up and the beauty of the Island was brushed by the first ray of sun through the clouds.

     hide tide and as high as it will go.Next day the whole islands grass will be greener and the beach will widen to a lower tide.
